Head, Department of English
It gives me pleasure to welcome you to the Department of English, Kristu Jayanti (Deemed to be University). The Department integrates modalities of language, literature, culture and critical thinking to train students' creative imagination. The Department is committed to offering students an intellectually robust experience that engages with textuality and world-building exercises through critical thinking, effective communication and creative practices. Our Undergraduate and Postgraduate programmes in English are designed to explore multiple trajectories of English Studies, Comparative Literature and Cultural Studies, while embracing interdisciplinary perspectives. By designing the curriculum in a multi-dimensional fashion, we seek to move beyond conventional approaches in literary studies to model literary training as a dynamic engagement with society, history, identity, culture and lived experiences.
A distinctive feature of our academic journey is its emphasis on skills-based and value-added learning. Theatre productions, live exhibitions, skill studios, lectures, seminars, conferences, workshops and cultural initiatives — organised in the form of Cultural Labs — provide opportunities for students to transform theoretical knowledge into meaningful experiences. These engagements cultivate not only academic proficiency but also creativity, collaboration, leadership, communication and professional competence.
The Department also encourages co-curricular activities, leveraging department-specific clubs, namely the Erudite Club and Krysolite, enabling students to discover and express their literary, cultural and creative potential. Our commitment to experiential learning is further strengthened by international academic engagements and entrepreneurial initiatives that connect classroom learning with wider intellectual and professional communities. Every academic year marks a new trajectory for the Department, reflecting our commitment to an evolving and responsive vision of English Studies.
As you explore our Department, I invite you to become part of this community of curious and creative learners. May your journey with us inspire you to question, imagine, create and contribute meaningfully to the world beyond the classroom. Welcome to the Department of English.
